Rose diamonds are very popular in our shop, as they have loads of character and quite a bit of history. Also, we have a lot of customers asking all about the cut, so here's a tat of info on it.

The rose cut is one of the oldest cutting styles for diamonds. It emerged in the 1500's and was extremely popular in the 1700's through the 1800's.

A rose cut has a flat bottom with a varying number of triangular facets meeting together at a tipped crown, so no table. The earliest rose cuts were produced in Brabant (here in the Netherlands) and Antwerp. It can take on numerous shapes, the most common are squarish-round, oval and pear shapes. The earliest versions were with three, triangular-shaped facets. As the years progressed, so did the number of facets until the facet total reached 24, which added more sparkle.

Rose cut diamonds can often be found in antique jewelry created during the Georgian (1698-1830), Victorian (1837-1901) and Edwardian (1901-1910) period. Because this gemstone cut created a higher amount of brilliance than any other cut at the time, it remained popular for more than a century.

Victorian rings often featured clusters of rose cut diamonds in addition to other older cuts as solitaire engagement rings were not in fashion until the late 1890's
